
Tower 72 was originally the closest tower to the Redoubt Fortress and by 1850 the sea was washing its walls at spring tide.
The illustration on the Eastbourne Redoubt page was drawn by Harriette Harkness on July 31, 1830, and shows the Redoubt with Towers 72 and 71 to the east.

The photograph above, taken around 1850-60(?), shows that the tower had by this date been undermined and had collapsed onto the beach.
The only probable remains of Tower 72 (for it is not clear whether these stones came from East/West Langney Fort or Tower 72) are three granite firestep blocks and half of the carriage pivot coping, placed outside Eastbourne Redoubt.
