Tower 40 was being used by the Coast Guard, when on February 27, 1832, a fight between the smugglers and excisemen ended with a death on both sides, many injuries and a haul of confiscated spirits. The tower was not bombarded in artillery tests in 1860, as had previously been thought, but by 1873, the sea had begun to cause the tower to collapse, and so it was finally demolished on November 29, by the explosives of the Royal Engineers.
