Tower 37 had become unsafe due to undermining by the sea, and was blown up by the Royal Engineers in June 1866. Traces of a tower found at low tide in 1966 may have been from the tower. Coast Guard occupants listed in the 1851 census were Boatman Robert Newson, his wife Mary and son Robert.
