
Standing on the low-level beach at Hythe, Tower 17 is probably that which was mentioned in the Times of February 1899:
"The Martello tower near the Grand Redoubt at Dynchurch has been split in two by the action of the sea sucking away the shingle from the base." 1
A photo, (shown above) of the crumbling ruins with towers 18, 19, 20 and 21 behind, was printed in 'The Navy and Army Illustrated' in 1903.2 The Tower stood on 'E' Range, and was painted with a letter denoting this.
